Tell me about the subjects you are considering and why they are interesting to you. The three topics I chose to do are : Black cowboys, Buffalo soldiers, and The Exodusters. These three topics are about famous Blacks in Kansas. Because of not being published in books, or shown in movies or television, Black cowboys are not thought of being many, however, Blacks made up 25% of all cowboys. Buffalo soldiers originally were members of the U.S 10th Calvary-unit United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The nickname was given to the “negro Calvary” by the Native American tribes they fought. The term eventually became synonymous with all of the African-Americans regiments formed in 1866. Exodusters was a name given to African Americans who fled the Southern United States for Kansas in 1879 and 1880. After the end of Reconstruction, racial oppression and rumors of the re-institution of slavery led many freedmen to seek a new place to live. Many migrated to, and then settled, primarily in Kansas because of its fame as the land of the abolitionist John Brown (1800–1859). The state was reputed to be more progressive and tolerant than most others.

I like your choices. I think they represent a diverse amount of black history in Kansas. It also makes it more regional and relevant history to the state. I would like to hear more background over the buffalo cowboys. I never really saw why you picked this topics, could you possibly explain why these three topics stand out from the rest?

I think this is great topic to use, I am grateful for people who were hated still served for the better of others. How will you do your poster?

Hey Jeff… pretty good topics there. I had heard of the “Buffalo Soldiers” but never the “Buffalo Cowboys” so I thought that was interesting. I have noticed throughout life there haven’t been a whole lotof blacks in old westerns. A sidekick here and there like in “Unforgiven,” that was a good one, but not a whole lot of movies where the star “cowboy” was a black man. Guess that does make a really good topic, huh? You could look up a bunch of old time western black cowboys and whip them into a poster the style of the old posters for like “The Outlaws,” you know… Johnny Cash, Kris Kristopherson and all them. So how did you go about researching subjects or topics for your poster? Just wondered, I’ve asked some others as well so I thought i’d ask you to. Anyway… good luck with your posters. Catch ya later…

Those are nice topics. Most people probably don’t think of blacks when they hear the word ‘cowboy’, I myself don’t, but the fact that around 25% of cowboys were black is interesting. I’m intrigued to see what you come up with for that, because it can be an enlightening/educational poster for some people.
